Update on the DeKalb County Board of Education meeting for June24, 2014 Thanks to everyone who came out to the Board meeting on Thursday night!! Here is a link to the video from the meeting that Southern Torch has posted concerning Valley Head. http://vimeo.com/99356186 | BOE - Valley Head Issue from Southern Torch on Vimeo. |
In summary:
For more details please watch the video. Mr. Carroll was only given 5 minutes to comment and I do not recall him being allowed rebuttal questions or comments after Mr. Taylor spoke. There was a little more conversation on the topic, but this is the video that was available.
As concerned citizens we want to know the renovations performed meet the necessary requirements to ensure a safe building for our children. Concerns have been voiced such as there being no insulation for interior walls, no moisture membranes for outside walls, and whether or not the electrical wiring is up to code. Also, it is my understanding that the Valley Head Rejuvenation Building Committee has an email from June 24th that states the Alabama Building Commission has not been involved in the renovation project. So have they been involved or not? Mr. Taylor says yes, then answers ESPO that the procedure was skipped.

- a state of emergency was declared to speed up the process so that renovation may be completed by August 7th when classes resume
- Attorney Jayson Carroll requested that the Board turn over the plans of renovation to the Alabama Building Commission as required by law
- Superintendent Hugh Taylor stated that the renovations were mostly superficial and that they have been in contact with members of the Building Commission
- the ESPO representative questioned Mr. Taylor as to why the Building Commission had not been involved and he had no reason except to say that it was a part of the procedure that was missed in the hurry to correct the mold situation
- Mr. Taylor stated the following work was being done
plaster removed and replaced with plywood and painted
new tiles on floor
new lockers ordered
replacing windows and doors as needed
floor joist repaired
wall studs replaced
updating electrical wiring
replacing all AC units in the high school building and adding dehumidifiers
mold cleanup by Mastercare to include desks and filing cabinets
reevaluation for mold before kids are allowed back inside
replace teacher desk and filing cabinets that can not be cleaned
the auditorium will be completed last because the classrooms take priority and need to be finished before school resumes
